Establishment Day
Members of the CCHGS dined at the Overlook Restaurant in
Leavenworth in
remembrance of Crawford County’s establishment on March 1, 1818. The society
recognizes March 1 as the official
establishment date for the county, and hopes to correct
anyone thinking of the
January 29 date. Crawford County was
formed from Harrison,
Orange, and Perry County in 1818. The act was passed
January 29, 1818, to go into effect
March 1, 1818.
Originally, Crawford County had four townships. Over time it was subdivided
into
our present nine townships.
The society plans to hold an annual celebration in honor of the
establishment of the county. Further information
will be announced at a later date.
Present were: Jim Kaiser, Richard and Priscilla Eastridge, Densil and
Sandra Wilson,
Hugh and Evelyn Jackson, Sharon Morris, Harry Wood,
Ruth Terry,
Edith Key, Roger and Karen Gleitz, Bobby and
Mary Wiseman, and Becky Hammond Stetter.
